Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer-Focal Plane Opto-Mechanical Assembly

Under contract to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), SDL designed, fabricated, and tested the re-imaging optics and focal plane mechanical support/cryogenic isolation FPOMA for TES, a high-resolution infrared imaging Fourier transform spectrometer. TES is part of NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) Aura mission to study the Earth's ozone, air quality, and climate. The Aura satellite launched in July 2004.

TES is the first satellite instrument to provide simultaneous concentrations of carbon monoxide, ozone, water vapor, and methane throughout Earth’s troposphere. This layer of the atmosphere is situated between the Earth’s surface and the altitude at which aircraft fly, and is an important part of the atmosphere that we often impact with our activities. TES measurements are revealing important information about climate change, the water cycle, and air pollution.
