Geosynchronous Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer

The GIFTS instrument, funded by NASA and NOAA, was successfully tested and calibrated as an engineering demonstration unit to groundā€validate technologies critical to future satellite-based weather observation systems.

The GIFTS instrument can measure the distribution, change, and movement of atmospheric moisture, temperature, and certain pollutant gases with the high vertical and temporal resolution. This sensor technology can provide the observations needed to predict where and when severe thunderstorms, and possibly tornados, would occur before they are visible on radar or in satellite cloud imagery.
