Space Environment Corporation RIFS Project

The Regional Ionospheric Forecast & Specification (RIFS) project combines observation hardware and weather models to produce specification and forecast products of the background and disturbed ionosphere.

The RIFS package provides warnings of ionospheric disturbances that impact navigation and communications systems. The RIFS package is entirely automated from instrument hardware, data acquisition & analysis, algorithms & modeling, and product generation.

The BLO deployment of instruments and the data acquisition system provides a real-world field test for the RIFS prototype. Instruments include a three-axis fluxgate digital magnetometer, a GPS L1-band scintillation monitor, and a portable ionosonde.

The Bear Lake field test (Fall 2000-Spring 2002) will demonstrate near-real-time data acquisition from a variety of sensors to drive the data-assimilation weather model of the regional ionosphere.
