Bear Lake Observatory

The Bear Lake Observatory (BLO), measures the effects of lower atmospheric energy and momentum inputs (i.e. tides, gravity, planetary waves) into the upper atmosphere and investigates subauroral phenomena during enhanced magnetic activity. BLO’s location ensures a minimum of scattered light and radio spectrum interference. The BLO facility includes:

• Seven experiment bays
• A fully shielded radar room equipped with a magnetometer
• Radar equipment
• Several cameras
• A weather station

BLO is an ideal location for mid-latitude aeronomy instruments for long-term or campaign-mode science. Several scientists have visited and used BLO, including Professor Wayne Hocking who used the facility to deploy a meteor radar. BLO is also configured to provide instrument calibration and testing. Currently, Space Environment Corporation is testing its prototype RIFS hardware consisting of a magnetometer, GPS scintillation receiver, and an ionosonde.
