Infrared sensors typically add a background which must be removed for accurate measurements of external scenes. During flight, the background is usually measured looking off into cold, dark, space. During ground testing, SDL’s space-view simulators provide a target to measure the sensor background.
- Cold and dark background similar to space
- LN2 and LHe background temperatures
- Cavity for high emissivity

FIRST is a long–wave imaging spectrometer that measures between 10–100 µm, filling a gap in the existing systems that monitored the Earth’s climate.
